Hundreds of cyclists from across Oklahoma and surrounding states will participate in the 28th annual Norman Conquest bicycle tour on July 12.
The event features different routes for cyclists to choose from that will take them through eastern Cleveland County.
The tour is hosted by the Bicycle League of Norman, and starts and ends at J.D. McCarty Center for children with developmental disabilities at 2002 E. Robinson St. in Norman.
“Bike riders from all over look forward to this challenging, hot and hilly, bike ride every year,” said Teresa Hart, chairwoman of the Norman Conquest.
Route distances include 23, 46 and 62 miles. This year’s event also includes a free, nine-mile town tour on July 11. The ride will leave at 6 p.m. from Lazy Circles Brewing Co., 422 E. Main St. and follow a route through the surrounding neighborhoods. After the ride, people who are registered for the Norman Conquest can pick up their packets inside Lazy Circles Brewing Co.
Cyclists will start the bike tour at 7 a.m. on July 12. Riders will be supported with rest stops along the way and SAG (Support And Gear) vehicles on all routes.
Riders interested in the event can register at bicycleleagueofnorman.com. All participants receive a T-shirt and can enjoy lunch after the ride.
Proceeds from the Norman Conquest help support Camp Claphans, a summer camp for children with disabilities that is an outreach program of J.D. McCarty Center.
“We are so grateful to the Bicycle League of Norman and to the hundreds of cyclists who make the Norman Conquest such an exciting and successful event,” said Sharla Bardin, marketing director at J.D. McCarty Center. “This annual event has helped enhance our Camp Claphans program and has provided more opportunities for children with disabilities from across Oklahoma to attend the camp.”
