After the race, an open house and celebration will take place at the camp, which is now in its 10th year of operation. Families are invited to attend the open house to learn more about the camp program. Also, former campers and counselors are encouraged to attend the celebration.
Camp Claphans, which opened in 2013, is a summer camp for kids with disabilities. The camp serves children from ages 8 to 20 and is an outreach program of the J.D. McCarty Center.
The camp is named in honor of Sammy Jack Claphan, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and an Oklahoma native. Claphan was a former University of Oklahoma and NFL football player who later became a special education teacher in Oklahoma.
