| In the state
of Oklahoma, there are no summer camps specifically
designed and built for children with developmental
disabilities. The J. D. McCarty Center has plans
to build one on our 80-acre hospital campus in
Norman.
We have selected a site to build this camp
on the north shore of a 20-acre lake on our
campus. Initially, the camp will consist of
5 cabins. Each cabin will have eight campers.
This will give us the capacity to provide a
one-week camp experience to 400 children per
year. There are eight one-week sessions planned
for the summer with a one-week session during
the fall break and one during the spring break.
Naming Opportunity
An Individual or organization willing to
donate the cost of building a camp cabin can
honor someone by naming the cabin for them.
One cabin has already been financed in honor
of Sammy Jack Claphan. Sammy Jack played high
school football for Stilwell, Oklahoma. His
college ball was played at the University of
Oklahoma where he was drafted into the National
Football League. He played for the Cleveland
Browns and the San Diego Chargers. When Sammy
Jack retired from football, he returned to Oklahoma
where he was a special education teacher in
his hometown of Stilwell. Sammy Jack died unexpectedly
in 2001.
